Holding the White House accountable

It's a great time to be a Democrat in Congress.
In fact, with the Republicans scrambling on the defense, some people think we Democrats should just keep our heads down, protect our lead in the polls, and let the Republicans self-destruct.
I totally disagree.
I wasn't elected (or for that matter, raised!) to sit back and bide my time. No, I want to make sure Congress delivers a powerful dose of accountability to the White House. We must consider censure and impeachment measures against both President Bush and Vice President Cheney.
Vice President Dick Chaney purposefully manipulated the intelligence gathering process to deceive the American people and fabricate a threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. He openly threatened Iran absent any real threat to the United States, and in doing so undermined our national security, violating his constitutional oath and duty in the process.
Well-documented reports in the press indicate that the Vice President believes he is above the law, and beyond the reach of accountability from Congress, the American people, or anyone else for that matter.
My decision to back the impeachment of the Vice President was not made lightly. But it is my duty as a member of Congress, to hold him accountable for his willful and repeated disregard for the Constitution, international treaties, environmental protections, and the fundamental values that form the bedrock of our democracy.
I know my support for these tough accountability measures invites scrutiny from the far right. But this country can’t afford to give in to those who say our best bet in the 2008 elections is to run out the clock. |

| I am originally from Canada and just recently (2002) became a U.S. citizen, even tho I have lived in the U.S. most of my life (with a Green Card). I can't begin to tell you how discouraged I get when watching the news, reading the newspaper; this is NOT the country I was raised in: I remember working for the Michigan ACLU back in the 1960's and being proud of that fact---We must join hands and fight for Rights that this country was founded on: The Impeachment of the Vice President sounds like a great idea, but let's not stop there. THANK YOU Tammy! |

Just read the Senate's slowing down their drive to make the revisions permanent.
Are there solid assurances that this will be going through House Judiciary before a floor vote?
Better to just let the summer revisions expire in Feb. than to pass a weak rollback that'll become permanent. |

I absolutely agree! The Founders gave us an impeachment mechanism precisely for the purpose of holding our leaders accountable. Both Bush and Cheney have misused the public trust, and their lies have cost American lives.
Yes, there will be comments from the far right, but the reality is they are not (and never will be) your supporters. Please encourage your fellow Democrats to remember 'who brought you to the dance.'
